William Cullen Bryant was born a Puritan in 1794 in Cummington Massachusettes. Bryant wrote his first poem at age ten and his first book in 1808 at age 13. The book was called ?Embargo? in which he demanded the resignation of President Jefferson. At age 16 he wrote the poem ?Thanatopsis? which stands for a view of death in greek. Thanatopsis was published in The North American Review in 1817. Also, at age 16, Bryant entered the sophmore class of Williams college.


College got to expensive for him so he dropped out. At age 26 he married Frances Fairchild which whom he was happy with until her death 50 years later. In 1825 he moved to New York to become coeditor of the New York Review . He then became editor of the Evening post in 1827. In his late 70?s he finished Odyssey and printed it in his collection of poems in 1876. He was extremely popular in his time and at one point was named as a candidate for President. Bryant then died in 1878 in New York. Some of his most famous poems are Thanatopsis, To a Waterfall, the Odyssey, Inscription for the Entrance to wood, and finally Green River. Bryant is mostly remembered for his poems including his native Berkshire hills, which are featured in Thanatopsis and To a Wat
